Baby bottle battle

By Jeanne Wieland Monday, Aug 18 2008, 02:58 PM

This is not an easy time to be a new mom. It seems something new is coming out every week or so that could threaten your baby's health -- and the information on what is best to do is rarely crystal clear.

Take this bisphenol A situation, for example. A few months ago, the reports were scary. Bisphenol A, commonly found in baby bottles and water bottles, was being blamed for everything from cancer to hyperactive children. The prevailing advice was that parents should get that stuff far away from their children.

A report released by the FDA in the past few days refutes those claims, and suggests that the chemical is safe for infants, children and adults.

Just to be on the safe side, you can try to avoid products with bisphenol A in them, but that can be tricky. And now with these conflicting reports, is it important to be vigilant about this or not? How far do you go?

I'm curious about what the newest moms think. How are you handling this question? If you have thoughts on this, leave a comment for me.

While registering this summer, that was the ONE thing that made me crazy.  I could not figure out which brand of bottles to register for. I wanted the Dr. Browns, but they didn't have the BPA free at the time, and I didn't want to buy glass because Rick is a total klutz.

I felt like a bad Mom for wanted the BPA ones because they are easier...but it's the type of bottles my Mom used on me and the boys...and we turned out fine.

I ended up getting the Dr. Brown because it reduces gas and colic....and then I returned them and got the Playtex drop ins.  Not because they are BPA free (which they are) but because they are easy to clean and it's what my hospital told me to use.

Also, while I was pregnant, I had a Nalgene bottle I drank out of all day because I knew how much water I was getting.  Then all this nonsense came out at I pitched it.

I know this is long, but my point is the FDA should not mess with pregnant woman and new Moms.  SERIOUSLY MAKE UP YOUR MINDS.
