I definitely had mixed feelings when I watched the show. On the one hand, I felt sorry for John but on the other, I felt like he should just "suck it up" because, as you pointed out, the show has allowed them to do so much for their 8 children, things that would not have been possible otherwise.

I read Kate's book, Multiple Blessings, and it made me wonder how much of her "control" over John that we see on T.V. is a result of editing. In the book, she appears to be much more deferential to him as the head of the household.

Yeah, I definitely feel sorry for Jon. He seems a bit beaten down by Kate who seems to like to control everything. I think they should take a year off, but I'm not sure if their deal allows that. You're right. it's not reality.
